last post for sustainability

Hey well this is the end of Sustainability, had a great time learning new things about how to change the world to be more sustainability, What really stood out for me would be the week of sustainability, that hit me hard made me relaise what I can change to help out the world

Although I did learn alot and I thought the teaching was well done, don't get me wrong, but I still feel that it was a waste of time as what im looking for to learn is about tourism and travel . But saying that I did learn alot and will take away alot of facts

Explain the concept of sustainability
What i believe sustainability is all about: Looking after the present and future generation that is including environment , economically and social that relates to sustainability.

Share your views of the natural world
I believe by teaching our generation about sustainability helps out that natural world as it is in need of help especially the environment, with just the amount of cars that are being driven the increase of oil we use.

What do you consider to be more important for our world and species
It is simple keeping New Zealand green and healthy like we are promoting to other countries, reduce air pollution is the biggest issue!

Research for video- Tuesday and Wednesday

TUESDAY- CAR LESS DAY

What is the effect of not living this way on our environment, society and economy?
o Continued use of your car when there is public transport available contributes to the increasing air pollution
o A percentage of your weekly pay going towards increased fuel costs
o There will be large demand for oil as New Zealand is heavily dependent on oil for transport for goods and people
o If we keep using the amount of oil that we are at this moment petrol prices will increases even more and we won’t have any resources when in need of a emergency
o Widespread persistent pollution in the air
o Expensive, hazardous, noisy and polluting
o Short car journeys cause maximum air pollution and are bad for the car engines too

What are the benefits of operating this way on our environment, society and economy?
o Not having to use your own car
o Using less oil so there won’t a large demand for oil as now the demand of oil is exceeding the supply
o Not polluting the air as much as there will be a decrease in cars and more of buses so there will be fewer cars on the road
o Having resources to use in emergencies
o There will also be less traffic on the road
o You will consume fosil fuels at a slower rate
o Not having to pay much on fuel as the fuel prices are rising

What are the benefits to each of us personally in living/operating this way?
o Not having to use your car so you would be saving on petrol and car expenses
o Using public transport
o Being able to meet new people as well when you take public transport
o Cycling to the destination, goes door to door, no parking costs, keep you fit, often fasten than a queued city traffic
o Helping with global warming

WEDNESDAY –POWER SAVING DAY

What is the effect of not living this way on our environment, society and economy?
o There is a huge demand for people as people still seem to be using them so power costs will rise because of the impact that it has on the environment
o Could have a serious impact on the next generation with the power we use today
o Using limited resources that we don’t have which will damage the earth.
o Using up all the resources and not having any for emergency circumstances.
o Wasting renewable electricity
o People are turning to wind power and solar heating because New Zealand is approaching the limits of acceptable hydro power generation from bug rivers and dams

What are the benefits of operating this way on our environment, society and economy?
o Saving on power and having a cheaper power bill at the end of the month.
o Increasing awareness and responsibility and demand for better choices.
o Showing everyone out there, that there is a way to save on power and help the environment.
o Improving quality in life in ways that will help the earth’s support system.
o By saving power you could use energy bulbs instead of normal light bulbs as they do not consume the amount of energy that a normal would.
o Minimising CO2 emissions by using any fossil carbon fuel (coal, oil, or gas) efficiently as possible

What are the benefits to each of us personally in living/operating this way?
o Not having large power bills
o Knowing that you are helping out the world and not using the limited resources that we have.
o Killing bacteria off your clothes buy drying them outside in the UV light in the sunshine
o Helping with global warming
o Not wasting power

Feedback from the discussion about out assessment

I think that idea of making a video about sustainability is going to work well. i really like the idea of doing it with the 7 days of sustainability so each day someone changes something in there life to make more sustainability, especially likes becz idea of clothing (showing some clothers from a shop and telling how dare it is, then going into the op shop and buying a set of clothing for a fraction of the price of the other pieces of clothing.
Every ones needs to help out somehow buying editing the video to buying the clothers to get this done well..
I also think we do need to promote this like Mandy was saying about putting it on business cards and handing them out and maybe having a opening of the video in the one of the rooms one lunch time or something like that..
I think we are progressing really well and we will end up with a very good final result if everyone joins in, every opinion matters neither right or wrong.

The way I practice Sustainability in my Own Life

1. At home I recycle till the best that I can

2. Not buying lots of drink bottles to sdrink water out of , I use the same drink bottle untill i need to replace it , which i not very often.

3.Get rides from other people that also live out of town to town

4. Walk to my destination if it is possible eg I walk from work to tec everyday time tec and work falls on the same day

5. Saving electricity to the best I can by turning off appliances when I am not using them

Story of Stuff

What really hit home for you?
The story of stuff 20min movie should me that i can do so much more in helping with sustainability and also is amazing how i found out about the cycle of buying and working.

What do you question about the movie?
I have no questions about this movie as i though i was a simple and easy way to get the messages across with simple drawings that allot of people could understand and would of been easy to make as well.

What would i like to exlpore further
The most interesting topic in the movie that i would like to explore a bit more into it is the cycle of buying and working as it, as it showed me a different ways of thinking of the moey that you earn by working and where it goes and what happens to it.

The last lesson that we just has i personally did not help me but that may change my mind can easily change in the days to come.

Comments on Quotes

Every day we are exposed to a barrage of information, advertisements, and stories in newspapers, on billboards and on television… information that tells us what is important in the world… advertisements that tell us about our priorities in life… and billboards that encourage us to want more. It may seem all too easy to just accept what we read and what we are told… But stop and think about what is really being said?… What are we really being sold?… What are the real messages?… Who is telling them and why are they telling them?… Who benefits from these messages?
Next, reflect on your own thoughts and perceptions… What assumptions are you making about the messages you read and hear?… How do your personal values influence these perceptions?… How has your family life, culture, gender or faith shaped the way you interpret these messages… the world?"

I agree with this quote allot as people in the world when they see a advertisement they don't see the background of the advertising they only see the smaller picture. People these days need to not just look at the smaller picture, think outside the square and think some advertisement that don't grab your attention and which you think are 'stupid' are not they are sometimes better for you in the long run than the better looking ones.

There are always competing interests in debates about sustainability and it is important to build tolerance around different interests and perspectives. However, it is also important to keep questioning and scrutinising what it is that people and institutions are actually seeking to sustain

I believe this quote is to keep an open mind about the meaning of sustainability and not just have a one definition of what you think sustainability means. There is more to it than one definition.

Different approaches to Sustainability to learning and teaching

We have the choice of designing the assessment for this Sustainability Practice and I believe by using the indirect action which is education others like making a stall to promote and educate a product is good approach to learning about sustainability.

Also having every ones suggestions so everyone make an input in what the design of the assessment is going to be. I think the lecturer should have some input in what we are going to design maybe a few tips but them its the choice of the students of what we do as a individual or in teams
